Ashtanga Yoga Practice Guidelines

Students should not eat before practice but may drink a cup of water, tea or juice with at least 30 minutes before practice time. Students should be clean and showered prior to practice. As a suggestion, bring a large beach towel or a sarong or lungie to cover yourself during Shavasana (resting) to add to your ‘healing feeling’ of being in a warm safe cocoon.

Note: Each student must provide their own yoga practice mat. No used yoga mats or mat rentals are provided or stored. We do offer a basic new yoga mat for purchase: $20

Moon Days: The Ashtanga Yoga method is intended to be a daily practice with 1 (one) day a week for rest (no practice). It is also recommended that the rest day is the same day each week. In addition, tradition calls for rest (no practice) on New Moon and Full Moon days. The reason for not practicing on New Moon and Full Moon days are due to the extreme polarities of the Moon’s energy, leaving the practitioner susceptible to injury.

Ladies Holiday: Women are also advised to take rest (no practice) for the first three days of menstruation, as engaging the bandhas (internal muscular locks) at that time is counter-intuitive to the downward action of their cycle.
